Tenure-Track Professor of Teaching, Food Animal Health and Production, WCVM
Applications are invited from qualified individuals for a full-time, tenure-track Professor of Teaching position in Food Animal Health and Production in the Department of Large Animal Clinical Sciences (https://wcvm.usask.ca/departments/large-clinical.php) at the Western College of Veterinary Medicine (WCVM) (https://wcvm.usask.ca/).
This position entails a 60% commitment to veterinary service, including the clinical supervision of fourth-year students in the Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) program. Approximately 25% of the successful candidate’s time will be dedicated to classroom teaching in the areas of food animal health and production, with an emphasis on beef cattle. The remaining 15% of the appointment will be available for other academic pursuits, administrative responsibilities, and related activities.
Service responsibilities include participation in the Food Animal Field Service of the Veterinary Medical Centre (VMC) (https://vmc.usask.ca/), including shared after-hours and on-call duties. Currently, the Food Animal Field Service comprises two full-time Clinical Associates and one faculty member who devotes half of their appointment to field service. We anticipate hiring a third Clinical Associate and, with the addition of this Professor of Teaching, increasing the service to four full-time equivalent positions. The service also receives support from the Food Animal Theriogenology Service.
The WCVM is Western Canada’s regional college of veterinary medicine and currently enrolls about 360 veterinary students from three western provinces and northern jurisdictions. Approximately 90 fourth-year DVM students complete 40 weeks of applied veterinary medicine (clinical rotations), during which they develop, integrate, and apply veterinary medical knowledge and skills in clinical settings while under supervision. Although Food Animal Field Service is an elective rotation, it is fully subscribed and hosts students throughout the academic year. The successful candidate will be expected to demonstrate progressive growth and professional development in teaching and educational pedagogy, consistent with the University’s Standards for Promotion and Tenure.
Located within the WCVM, the VMC is a state-of-the-art hospital and referral centre accredited by both the American Veterinary Medical Association and the American Animal Hospital Association. The VMC offers specialty services and training in anesthesia; dentistry; dermatology; exotic, wild, and zoo animal medicine; internal medicine; medical imaging; nutrition; oncology; ophthalmology; radiation oncology; surgery; and theriogenology. The VMC provides the only comprehensive specialty and referral service for large animal surgery in Saskatchewan.

The main campus is situated in Saskatoon, on Treaty 6 Territory and the Homeland of the Métis. The city offers a diverse and thriving economic base, a vibrant arts community, and a wide range of recreational and cultural opportunities.
Applicants must hold a DVM degree or equivalent and be eligible for licensure with the Saskatchewan Veterinary Medical Association (https://svma.sk.ca/become-a-member/dvm/). Experience in food animal practice, prior teaching experience, an advanced degree in a related field, and certification by the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners will each be considered assets.
Salary for this position for the 2026-2027 academic year ranges from $113,527 to $135,535 and will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
This position is within the scope of the University of Saskatchewan Faculty Association (https://usaskfaculty.ca/) and includes a comprehensive benefits package consisting of dental, health and extended vision care; pension plan; life insurance (compulsory and voluntary); academic long-term disability coverage; sick leave; travel insurance; death benefits; employee assistance program; professional expense allowance; and a flexible health and wellness spending program.
