Elanco is the sponsor of this award that is in memory of Dr. Brian MacNaughton, an outstanding bovine veterinarian from Ontario who many years ago, had the vision of a national bovine veterinary organization that would represent the interests of bovine veterinarians in matters of a national scope. He recognized that the four regional bovine associations were strong and effective at the regional level and that they provided excellent continuing education for their members. He understood however that a national voice would be beneficial for bovine veterinarians and their profession, for the dairy and beef cattle industries, and for associated agribusinesses.
The Metacam® Bovine Welfare Award is given annually to a DVM or animal scientist working in Canada, a faculty member or a graduate student of a Canadian university to recognize his/her achievements in advancing the welfare of animals via leadership, public service, education, research/product development, and/or advocacy. By doing so, the CABV/ACVB hopes to raise public awareness of the important role veterinarians and animal scientists play in:
- Improving bovine welfare in cattle production and research systems
- Improving scientific methods of measuring bovine welfare

Award recognizes outstanding contributions to advancing animal welfare in Canada
September 22, 2025 – Dr. Isabelle Maheu of Sainte-Christine, Quebec has been named the recipient of the 2025 Metacam® Bovine Welfare Award for her unwavering commitment to the health and well-being of cattle. Her pioneering work and contributions to improving animal welfare have been instrumental within Canada’s agricultural and veterinary community.
The Metacam® Bovine Welfare Award is presented annually by the Canadian Association of Bovine Veterinarians (CABV) / Association Canadienne des Vétérinaires Bovins (ACVB) in partnership with Boehringer Ingelheim Animal Health Canada Inc. Dr. Maheu was presented with the award at the 2025 L’Association des Médecins Vétérinaires Praticiens du Québec annual conference on Sept. 20, 2025.
“The CABV/ACVB extends its congratulations to Dr. Isabelle Maheu,” said Dr. Nathan Erickson, President of the CABV/ACVB. “Dr. Maheu’s dedication to educating clients on pain management and proper care for injured animals has made a meaningful and positive impact to cattle welfare and the veterinary profession.”
Dr. Maheu is a veterinarian at the Bureau vétérinaire de Richmond where she focuses on preventive and curative medicine for cattle. She is committed to educating clients about the importance of pain management and proper methods for moving non-ambulatory cows, with an emphasis on using appropriate tools. She also shares her knowledge by mentoring students at the University of Montreal, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine.
Beyond her daily practice, Dr. Maheu was at the heart of the creation of a working group within the Stratégie québécoise en santé et bien-être animal, focused on non-health related animal emergencies. The group’s mandate is to support owners, animal caretakers and industry specialists in preparing for crisis situations, including fires. Her work on emergency planning has been presented at provincial conferences to veterinarians, agronomists and producers – raising awareness, sharing practical knowledge and driving solutions to improve animal welfare during crisis. She also worked with local firefighters to strengthen resource coordination, ensuring access to adapted material and faster mobilization of veterinary services during farm fires, ultimately improving animal care and outcomes.
“I feel extremely privileged to have been nominated for an award I hold in such high regard,” Dr. Maheu said. “Without the support of my many colleagues, I wouldn’t have been able to dedicate myself so fully to this concern for animal welfare, which has always been at the heart of my practice.”
Dr. Maheu is recognized by her colleagues and clients for her devotion and professional rigor to improving animal welfare and driving meaningful change.
In support of her award nomination, Jean-Phillippe Roy, DVM, M.Sc., Dipl. ECBHM, Full professor at University of Montreal, said Dr. Maheu is an extraordinary leader and is a role model for the veterinary profession.
“Dr. Maheu is a passionate veterinarian, dedicated to animal welfare along with demonstrating outstanding human qualities,” he said. “Her ultimate objective has always been the health and well-being of farm animals, which is the source of her motivation and what has guided her remarkable accomplishments.”

Dr. Robert Tremblay Honored with the Elanco / Dr. Brian MacNaughton Memorial Award
Elanco Canada honours Dr. Robert Tremblay with the fourth Brian MacNaughton Memorial Award, recognizing his outstanding contributions to bovine veterinary medicine in Canada.
Mississauga, Ontario, September 12, 2024 – Elanco Canada is pleased to announce that Dr. Robert Tremblay has been awarded the fourth Elanco / Dr. Brian MacNaughton Memorial Award, recognizing his significant contributions to the field of bovine veterinary medicine in Canada.
The Elanco / Dr. Brian MacNaughton award honors a veterinarian for significant contributions to the Canadian Association of Bovine Veterinarians (CABV) and to organized veterinary medicine in Canada at the national level. This award commemorates Dr. Brian MacNaughton, a visionary Ontario bovine veterinarian who advocated for a national bovine veterinary organization to unite regional associations and amplify their collective voice for the benefit of the profession and related industries.
"Dr. Tremblay's dedication to bovine health is truly remarkable," said Michelle McCotter, General Manager of Elanco Canada. "His leadership in disease prevention and control, along with his commitment to advancing best practices in the field, has significantly benefited Canadian cattle farmers and the industry as a whole. We are honored to recognize his achievements."
Dr. Robert Tremblay grew up in New Brunswick and graduated from the Ontario Veterinary College (OVC) in 1982, after which he started his career in large animal practice with the NB Department of Agriculture in Woodstock, New Brunswick. Eager to expand his expertise, he pursued further studies at the University of Guelph and earned his Doctor of Veterinary Science degree in 1988. He remained at OVC as faculty in Large Animal Medicine until 1992 and became a Diplomat in the same field with the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine.
From 1992 until 1999, Dr. Tremblay served as a Health Consultant for cattle and ruminants at the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs. He also became one of the experts on bovine viral diarrhea (BVD) during the outbreaks in the province, assisting in vaccine development and control of the outbreak. In 1999, Dr. Tremblay joined Boehringer Ingelheim where he worked until his recent retirement. In his role as a Technical Services Veterinarian, he engaged with producers and veterinarians at various events across the country to explore new methods for enhancing veterinary and farm practices.
Dr. Tremblay has significantly contributed to the field through numerous articles in journals and magazines. Largely dedicating his career to preventing and controlling diseases in cattle, he has led numerous information sessions and roundtables for producers and veterinarians, with a focus on disease prevention and animal welfare. Moreover, Dr. Tremblay's extensive experience and expertise has made him a sought-after expert on food producing-animal-related advisory committees, including the Canadian Quality Milk and the proAction programs (Dairy Farmers of Canada) and the Verified Beef Production program (Canadian Cattlemen Association).
In line with those remarkable achievements, Dr. Tremblay has also continuously been involved in veterinary organizations. For example, an instrumental force behind the Atlantic Bovine Practitioner Association (ABPA) since 2000, Dr. Tremblay has continuously upheld the ABPA’s mission through various leadership roles and as a key leader ensuring its continuity.
Finally, a seasoned CABV Board member and past President, Dr. Tremblay currently serves as its 1st Vice President and is poised to be President again in the near future.

September 12, 2024 – Dr. Diego Moya of the University of Saskatchewan has been named the recipient of the 2024 Metacam® Bovine Welfare Award for his outstanding contributions to research, education, and public service, significantly advancing the scientific understanding of bovine welfare and implementing improvements within this field.
The Metacam® Bovine Welfare Award is presented annually by the Canadian Association of Bovine Veterinarians (CABV) / Association Canadienne des Vétérinaires Bovins (ACVB) in partnership with Boehringer Ingelheim Animal Health Canada Inc. Dr. Moya was announced as the award winner at the Annual General Meeting of the CABV/ACVB in Columbus, Ohio on Sept. 12, 2024.
"The CABV/ACVB extends its congratulations to Dr. Diego Moya,” said Dr. Jodi Wallace, President of the CABV/ACVB. “Dr. Moya’s passion for animal welfare, that is so well reflected in his research and in all of his professional activities, has been a great benefit to cattle and to those who work with cattle."
Dr. Moya is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Large Animal Clinical Sciences at the University of Saskatchewan. His research focuses on how nutritional management can enhance animal welfare, how to mitigate pain associated with castration in beef cattle and investigating the connections between animal welfare, behaviour, and disease.
In addition to his research, Dr. Moya is a strong advocate for animal welfare in modern agriculture, serving on animal welfare committees, including the Saskatchewan Veterinary Medical Association Animal Welfare Committee and the University of Saskatchewan Scientific Merit Review Committee for Animal-Based Research.
“I am deeply honoured to receive the 2024 Metacam Bovine Welfare Award,” Dr. Moya said. “I am grateful for this award and the opportunity to join the ranks of esteemed past recipients who have all made substantial contributions to improving bovine welfare. This recognition also reflects the unwavering support I have received from my colleagues and mentors.”
In his support for the award nomination, Dr. Christopher Luby, Associate Professor and Head Department of Large Animal Clinical Science, said Dr. Moya is a recognized leader in bovine welfare.
“Dr. Moya has significantly advanced our scientific understanding of bovine welfare and implemented improvements in this field,” said Dr. Luby. “He has shown exceptional leadership in imparting the science, ethics and culture of animal welfare to the next generation of veterinarians and animal scientists.”

CABV/ACVB's Bylaws indicate that an Honorary Life Membership may be awarded to a veterinarian who has been judged to have made an exceptional contribution to the affairs of the Association and/or to the practice of bovine veterinary medicine in Canada.
Members may nominate a potential recipient by forwarding a letter to the CABV/ACVB Nominating Committee outlining the nominee's achievements and explaining why the individual is worthy of an Honorary Life Membership. Nominations will be presented to the CABV/ACVB Board of Directors for approval.
Consider nominating a deserving individual. Awards will be presented at the CABV/ACVB AGM, or the AGM of the recipient’s regional bovine veterinary association.

September 21, 2023 – Dr. Charlotte Winder of the University of Guelph in Ontario has been named the recipient of the 2023 Metacam® 20 Bovine Welfare Award for her unwavering commitment to cattle health and welfare, and for her significant contributions to improving the well-being of dairy cattle.
The Metacam® 20 Bovine Welfare Award is presented annually by the Canadian Association of Bovine Veterinarians (CABV) / Association Canadienne des Vétérinaires Bovins (ACVB) in partnership with Boehringer Ingelheim Animal Health Canada Inc. Dr. Winder was announced as the award winner at the Annual General Meeting of the CABV/ACVB in Milwaukee, Wisconsin on Sept. 21, 2023.
"The CABV/ACVB extends its congratulations to Dr. Charlotte Winder,” said Dr. Ray Reynen, President of the CABV/ACVB. “Charlotte's passion for animal welfare, that is so well reflected in her research and in all of her professional activities, has been a great benefit to cattle and to those who work with cattle."
Dr. Winder is an Associate Professor in the Department of Population Medicine at the Ontario Veterinary College at the University of Guelph. Her research focuses on improving the health and performance of ruminant species, primarily dairy cattle and small ruminants. Research areas include pain management in ruminants, health management and performance of youngstock, knowledge translation and transfer, and knowledge synthesis. Dr. Winder is a clinician within the ruminant ambulatory practice and teaches in the Doctor of Veterinary Medicine program.
“I’m honoured to be the recipient of the 2023 Metacam® 20 Bovine Welfare Award,” Dr. Winder said. “My work in bovine welfare research has only been possible with substantial contributions from graduate students, academic colleagues and collaborators, producers, and veterinarians, as well as support from industry. I’m grateful for the opportunity to work in this area, and for the recognition of the importance of bovine welfare by the CABV and Boehringer Ingelheim.”
In her support of the award nomination, Dr. Kelly Barratt, Global Director Animal Welfare at Saputo, said Dr. Winder’s experience in practice allows her to translate her research findings into practical recommendations.
“Her ability to translate her extensive knowledge into everyday applications that benefit both cattle and farmers is truly remarkable,” Dr. Barratt said.
Also in support of the nomination, Ann Godkin, DVM, DVSc, Ceptor Cattle Health and Education Programs, spoke of how Dr. Winder’s research into pain management and exploration of different teaching methods contributed to widespread adoption of good pain management practices and the use of better technical protocols for dairy and beef calves.
“This has been a great example of a strong educational effort using research outcomes to shift veterinary and producer’s attitudes towards pain relief in a positive direction resulting in greatly improved cattle welfare,” she said.

By doing so, the CABV/ACVB hopes to raise public awareness of the important role veterinarians and animal scientists play in:

Dr. Émile Bouchard Receives the 2022 Dr. Brian MacNaughton Memorial Award
Elanco Canada honours Dr. Émile Bouchard with the third Brian MacNaughton Memorial Award, recognizing his outstanding contributions to bovine veterinary medicine in Canada.
“We are pleased to recognize Dr. Bouchard for his contributions to the field of bovine veterinary medicine”, said Michelle McCotter, General Manager of Elanco Canada. “Dr. Bouchard is renowned for his leadership and implication in the veterinary profession and truly embodies the spirit and purpose of the Dr. Brian MacNaughton Memorial Award.”
Born into a famous hockey playing family, Dr. Bouchard graduated in 1981 from the Faculté de médecine vétérinaire (FMV) of the Université de Montréal. After his internship, he started working at the FMV Ambulatory Clinic in 1982. Realizing the importance of modernizing dairy herd health management at the Ambulatory Clinic and in the province, Emile obtained a leave of absence in 1984 to pursue a population medicine residency program and an MPVM degree at the University of California, Davis.
Upon his return in 1988, in addition to his teaching and field service roles at FMV, Emile led, along with his colleagues Drs. Michel Bigras-Poulin and Denis Du Tremblay, the large R&D endeavour called Projet ASTLQ (Improvement of Dairy Herd Health in Quebec), which resulted in 1993 with the development of the dairy herd health software DSA, now used by the majority of dairy veterinarians in Quebec. He also developed the Dairy Population Medicine Residency Program at FMV in 1991 and contributed to the launch of the Canadian Bovine Mastitis Research Network, headquartered at FMV, in 2001.
Finally, in addition to his involvement with Quebec practitioners, Emile represented Canadian veterinarians as the director of District 12 of the American Association of Bovine Practitioners from 1995 to 2001 and was instrumental in making the 1997 Annual AABP conference in Montreal a great success. Emile also acted as a Canadian representative to the World Association for Buiatrics (WAB) since 1998 and was the President of the organizing committee for the 2004 World Buiatrics Congress in Quebec City. He was most recently President of the WAB, with his 2018 term ending at the Madrid World Buiatrics Congress in September 2022.
Dr. Luc DesCôteaux, Professor and colleague from FMV, nominated Dr. Bouchard for the Brian MacNaughton Memorial Award. This award is named in memory of Dr. Brian MacNaughton, an outstanding bovine veterinarian from Ontario who had the vision of a national bovine veterinary organization that would represent the interests of bovine veterinarians in matters of national scope. Dr. MacNaughton passed away in September 2014 after a courageous battle with cancer.
